Award Description

The Association of Medicine and Psychiatry is the national organization for physicians with combined training in medicine (internal medicine, family medicine, pediatrics, neurology) and psychiatry, and for all physicians committed to patient care, research and education at the interface of medicine and psychiatry. The Martin Fenton Award was established in 1998 to honor Dr. Martin Fenton, a founding member of the AMP, who exemplified the award criteria. He was an internist and psychiatrist who was an outstanding clinician, providing integrated medical and psychiatric care for his patients, as well as, an educator and a leader with a vision for excellence at the interface.

AMP will be selecting an outstanding med/psych resident to receive our 23rd award this year. The resident should be in his/her final year of training, in academic year 2024 – 2025, in a combined internal medicine/psychiatry, family medicine/psychiatry, pediatrics-psychiatry or neurology-psychiatry residency program in the United States.

The Martin Fenton Award will be presented at the national AMP meeting being held in Milwaukee, WI, from October 3 to October 5, 2024, at the Hyatt Regency Milwaukee. The award includes a $500 stipend to support the trainee in attending the AMP conference.

The awardee will serve as a non-voting resident member of the AMP Board of Directors, for the 2024-2025 year. His/her responsibilities will include:

  • attending board meetings (at teleconferences during the year, and at the 2024 annual meeting)
  • outreaching and working as a contact person for residents in combined residencies throughout the United States, to familiarize and get them involved with AMP
  • serving as a member of the Fenton Award Selection Committee for 2024-2025,
  • working on AMP projects of his/her choice

Please send us nominations of residents who have demonstrated two or more of the following:

  1. Outstanding Clinical Performance
  2. Outstanding Teaching Skills
  3. Outstanding Writing and/or Research
  4. Outstanding Service to Community
  5. Outstanding Leadership within their institutions
  6. Outstanding Leadership at a regional and/or national level.

Active participation and contributions to AMP will be given special consideration.

The completed nomination form, the resident’s CV, and a nominating letter must come from the resident’s training director, or a member of the Association of Medicine and Psychiatry. The letter should be no more than 250-300 words in length, delineating the outstanding accomplishments in 2 or more of the above areas.

The nominator (training director or AMP member), may also send additional materials supporting the nomination (papers, teaching curricula, etc. by the nominee).
