Disability in Medicine: The Me You Don't See

Synopsis:
Although graduate schools, medical schools, and teaching hospitals are striving to support learners with disabilities, they often lack the information and resources needed to create fully inclusive environments.  The Association of Medicine and Psychiatry Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee invites you to join us for a very important discussion highlighting the challenges that individuals with disability face as they pursue graduate education.  We hope that by the end of the hour you will be both enlightened and inspired.

Objectives

  • By the end of the presentation, learners will be able to identify various examples of disability, especially in graduate education.
  • By the end of the presentation, learners will understand the public health impact of disability.
  • By the end of the presentation, learners will be able to identify ways to support individuals with disabilities in graduate education at the individual level, institutional level, and community level.

Speaker: Joy Brooks, OMS-II, West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine
Joy Brooks graduated from Drew University with a B.A. in Neuroscience and a double Minor in Art and Chemistry.  She is currently a second year OMS student at West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine.  As a pre-med student, chose to apply exclusively to D.O. programs as they intentionally build their schools with a corresponding clinic in medically underserved communities to improve local access to healthcare. This aligns with her mission to serve the disenfranchised.

Speaker: Chijindu Diokpa, MS3, McGovern Medical School (Houston, TX)
Chijindu Diokpa is currently a third year student at McGovern Medical School in the MD-MPH program in Houston, Texas. He grew up in Huntsville, Texas, and obtained his B.S. in Biology from Baylor University in 2018. In the future, he hopes to practice in a combined residency program of medicine and psychiatry. He is an Albert Schweitzer Fellow and is passionate about diversity, advocacy, primary care, and community involvement.
