West Virginia University Medpsych Program Update

The Charleston Area Medical Center and West Virginia University in Charleston continue to maintain a strong commitment to the concept of combined internal medicine and psychiatry training.

With the addition of Dr. Thomas Williams, who joined the faculty upon completion of his combined residency, we now have three dedicated full-time internal medicine and psychiatry faculty members. Dr. Williams joins Dr. Hani Nazha, who also completed his training at our institution four years ago and was named the associate program director. Our faculty is rounded out by our program director, Dr. James Griffith.

At CAMC we have a culture of "growing our own." As our residents progress in their training, they are given an appropriate level of autonomy to lead in a variety of areas including clinical research, patient safety initiative, as well as quality improvement.

Our program is regularly well represented in the research competitions locally and nationally. Most recently, we were well represented at CAMC Research Day, a scholar festivity where more than a hundred research projects from all departments and training programs were presented and competed. Dr. Colleen Pettrey presented a case report called "Olmesartan Induced Sprue-Like Enteropathy," and Dr. Yahia Homsi placed third for his presentation on "A Case of Naltrexone Induced Allergic Pneumonitis."

Further, our residents are strongly involved in performance improvement projects. Dr. Daniel Cho, who started his residency this last July, is enthusiastically leading a project to develop a standardized tool for sign out between ER staff and our residents, hoping to reduce our patients' wait time in emergency rooms and expedite timely patient care.

Soon we will be celebrating the graduation of our current chief resident, Dr. Khaled Bowarshi, and our upcoming chief resident, Dr. Sunith Vijayakumar, is organizing a gathering to celebrate this achievement. Also, our program director, Dr. Griffith, is planning an outing with the residents for a trip on his boat.

We are excited to welcome our on-boarding interns, Dr. Damanvir Garcha and Dr. Sarah Henley, who will be joining our work family for the academic year of 2016- 2017.

We strive to continue our tradition of excellence in the following years!
