Association of Medicine and Psychiatry Annual Meeting

Clinical Case Vignette Competition:
The annual Resident Vignette Competition is intended to provide combined trainees with an opportunity to go through the process of creating a scholarly case report; the eight (8) residents selected through a competitive process to present their Vignette will be given 10 minutes to present the case at the Annual Meeting with 2-3 minutes for Q&A. 

Highly-rated clinical vignettes will highlight patient situations involving medical-psychiatric overlap that have one or more of the following attributes:

• They are rare diseases
• They highlight unusual presentations of common disease
• They illustrate an important principle about diagnosis or management
• They demonstrate an innovative and/or integrated approach to the management of a patient with co-morbid medical and psychiatric disease

It is a goal of AMP to facilitate translation of vignettes into case reports suitable for publication, for which reason the following rules are applicable to all vignette submissions:

1. The patient (or proxy decision-maker) provides informed consent for deidentified presentation of their medical information to a broader audience, possibly including in published format in a medical journal
2. The presenting resident is a trainee in good standing at a combined residency program (internal medicine-psychiatry, family medicine-psychiatry, pediatrics-psychiatry-child and adolescent psychiatry, or neurology-psychiatry) – the competition is not open to medical students
3. A faculty mentor is identified as a supervisor and/or coauthor on the vignette
4. The discussion includes review of relevant, up-to-date literature on the educational topic of emphasis

• Vignette abstracts must be submitted in the format described below and should include an introduction, a brief description of the patient scenario, and a brief discussion of the importance and educational merit of the case.
  • Abstracts will be reviewed by 2 independent reviewers who will determine suitability for presentation based on relevance to combined training and practice, educational interest, clinical relevance, and scholarly merit.
  • Vignette presenters are required to register and pay for travel, lodging, and attendance at the Annual Meeting of the Association of Medicine and Psychiatry in Milwaukee, Wisconsin,, where they will present their vignettes during one of two hours allotted for vignette presenttaionsEight vignettes will be chosen for presentation.
  • Vignettes will be selected for quality and diversity of program representation.  Though individuals from the same residency program may submit separate vignette abstracts, it is unlikely more than one abstract will be selected from the same program, and a maximum of two vignettes will be selected from any one residency program. Abstract submissions must be received by 8 p.m. East Coast time (5 p.m. Pacific time) on Tuesday, July 2, 2024.
  • Authors of abstracts accepted for the clinical case vignette competition will be notified by the beginning of August 2024.
• Vignette presentations will be limited to 10 minutes
  • Presenters will be given a warning when 2 minutes are remaining and again when 30 seconds are remaining.
  • Presenters who go over the 10 minute allotted time will lose points when being scored for the competition
  • Presenters who go beyond 12 minutes will not be allowed to continue their presentation as time constraints will not allow presentations beyond this time limit.
  • There will be a period of audience questions and discussion following the presentation, with a maximum of 15 minutes total time for each presentation including Q&A.
• Vignette presentations will be judged on the following criteria:
  • Clarity of presentation (15pts)
    • Concise, well organized, and complete
    • Verbal presentation
    • A/V materials
  • Significance (15pts)
    • Clinically important
    • Contributes to knowledge
    • Interesting
  • Relevance to clinical practice (15pts)
    • Unique overlap between medicine and psychiatry
    • Use of evidence-based methodology as applicable
  • Quality of Q&A and discussion period (5 pts)
  • Adherence to time limit. (-2 pts for 31-60 seconds over, -4pts for 61-90 seconds over, -6pts for 91-120 seconds over, -8 pts >2minutes over)
• A prize will be awarded for the first place vignette
  • Free admission to the next annual AMP meeting for all residents of the winning combined residency program
