Considerations for Providing Inclusive Care for Transgender and Gender Nonbinary People

Synopsis:

Gender-affirming care, as defined by the World Health Organization, encompasses a range of social, psychological, behavioral, and medical interventions “designed to support and affirm an individual’s gender identity” when it conflicts with the gender they were assigned at birth. During this session, participants will explore ways of creating both an inclusive and safe clinical environment for people who identify as transgender or non-binary.

Objectives:
By the end of this presentation:
a) Learners will be able to define the major categories and subcategories of identity related to sex
and gender.
b) Will better understand the importance of using correct pronouns and will identify and distinguish problematic and defamatory terms in referring to a gender non-conforming person.
c) Will be able to describe the role of the clinician in creating an inclusive and safe clinical environment for people who identify as being transgender or non-binary.
