Summary: In honor of Women's History Month, the Association of Medicine and Psychiatry is taking the time to recognize and celebrate the accomplishments of seven women who have made a significant impact on the lives of their patients as wells as the health systems in which they have worked.  

Objectives:

As a result of attending this panel session, participants will:

  • Learn more about the various career paths and opportunities that are afforded by combined training. 
  • Gain more insight into the challenges that women face throughout the career span.
  • Learn more about the nuances of work-life balance through the female lens.

Dr. Mary Beth Alvarez:

Dr. Alvarez joined the faculty of Medical College of Wisconsin to lead Behavioral Health integration in Froedtert Health’s outpatient clinics. After completing her undergraduate degree at Swarthmore College, she attended Tulane Medical School while concurrently earning her Master of Public Health focusing on International Health.  She went on to train in combined Internal Medicine/Psychiatry at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston where she served as Chief Resident.  As Training Director of the combined Internal Medicine/Psychiatry residency at Tulane School of Medicine, she led the post-Katrina rebirth and grew the group from 1 resident to 10.  As a National Health Service Corps Scholar, she split her time among multiple clinical settings in New Orleans including child and adolescent outpatient, school-based treatment, primary care clinics, hospitals, and residential addiction treatment centers.

Now in Milwaukee, Dr. Alvarez leads collaborative care teams treating depression and anxiety in primary care as well as staffing the Complexity Intervention Unit at Froedtert Hospital.  She is the founding Program Director at Medical College of Wisconsin’s brand-new Internal Medicine/Psychiatry Program.  Her research interest is in creating pathways of care for initiating and maintaining buprenorphine in medical settings.  She has expertise in multi-modal treatment for addiction, medically unexplained symptoms, sexual dysfunction, and health

Dr. Erin Dainer

Erin Dainer, MD serves as Chair of the Department of Psychiatry at Mather Hospital Northwell. Prior to joining Mather Hospital Dr. Dainer served as Regional Medical Director of Mental Health for Teladoc Health with the mission to integrate psychiatry in all aspects of medicine and to provide services to all regardless of their geographical locations. Prior to her employment at Teladoc Health, she directed the Adult Outpatient Psychiatry Clinic, Telepsychiatry, and Integration at Stony Brook University Hospital. While serving at Stony Brook she expanded ambulatory services from one outpatient clinic to three, and conceived and implemented its Telepsychiatry program. She further expanded psychiatric and behavioral health integration services to encompass adult primary care clinics as well as subspecialty and pediatric clinics. Within the Family Medicine clinics, she implemented collaborative care services. Dr. Dainer earned her Bachelor of Sciences degree in Biology with highest honors from Georgia Institute of Technology and her MD from the Medical College of Georgia. She trained in Internal Medicine and Psychiatry at Tulane University, which led to board certification in both specialties.

Dr. Jennifer Donovan

Dr. Donovan was born in a suburb of Washington, D.C., but grew up in Stanwood, Iowa (a small town east of Cedar Rapids). She enjoyed 4 years in Decorah, Iowa where she majored in Athletic Training and graduated from Luther College in 2006. She spent the next years of her life in Iowa City solidifying her love for the Hawkeyes while attending the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine and then completing a Family Medicine Psychiatry residency at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

Dr. Donovan currently practices both Family Medicine and Psychiatry with Unity Point Health in Cedar Rapids Iowa, and she also serves as a core faculty member in the University of Iowa Addiction Medicine Fellowship Program. Dr. Donovan holds board certifications in Family Medicine, Psychiatry, and Addictions Medicine; and in 2023, she became a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatry Association.

Jamie Evans:
Following graduation from the University of Cincinnati Family Medicine and Psychiatry program in 2013, Jamie worked for a federally qualified health center as a primary care physician caring for medically complex patients and performing behavioral health consultations for her primary care colleagues. Following her departure from full time primary care work in March 2018, she transitioned into a part time urgent care work (which she continued through 2023) before accepting a full time role doing acute care Psychiatry with Array Behavioral Care. In addition to being a Medical Director for the organization since July 2020, she also cares for patients in crisis in EDs, as well as performing Consult-Liaison services for inpatient medical and surgical units. She also co-chaired Array's Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion committee for 3 years, as well as serving as an active member of the Credentialing Committee. She also serves as a member of the DEI Committee for the Association of Medicine and Psychiatry (AMP).

Dr. Teresa Long

Dr. Long received her M.D. from the University of Kansas School of Medicine in 1989. She completed dual training in Internal Medicine and Psychiatry at the University of Iowa in 1994, and was Medical Director of the Hospital's Pain Management Service from the early 1990'w until her retirement in July, 2024. She was director of the Psychiatry Consultation/Liaison Service until her retirement and was Program director of the Internal Medicine/Psychiatry training program from 1995-2024.

Dr. Susan Padrino

Susan Padrino, MD completed her combined Internal Medicine and Psychiatry residency at Duke University Medical Center in 2004 and has been practicing medicine at the intersection of physical and mental health for the past 19 years. She is a Board Certified physician in Internal Medicine, Psychiatry, and Psychosomatic Medicine, who is passionate about providing medical care based on a deep understanding of the whole patient. This passion has led her to a broad range of clinical settings and roles in which she has often served as a thought leader and pioneer. Her accomplishments include establishing a Collaborative Care program with plan for system-wide expansion; opening a Complexity Intervention (aka Med-Psych) Unit within the general hospital; piloting e-consultations for specialty providers including behavioral health; leading a multidisciplinary team to improve outcomes for adult Sickle Cell patients; providing Medication Assisted Treatment to cancer and hematology patients with opioid use disorders. Dr. Padrino has also been a leader in Medical Education, most recently serving as the Assistant Dean for Clinical Education at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. She brings a deep understanding of curriculum design and reform, accreditation, and leadership. She continues to mentor and teach both residents and students, and is supporting efforts to expand Integrated Care training in the Psychiatry residency. Currently Dr. Padrino serves as the Medical Director for the Cleveland Location of AbsoluteCare, a healthcare system's whose mission is to take care of the whole person and the most vulnerable of the community.

Dr. Nicole Woodson-DeFauw

Dr. Woodson-DeFauw completed her undergraduate medical training at Meharry Medical College. Upon graduation she trained in the combined Family Medicine and Psychiatry Residency Program at the University of Iowa, where she served as Chief Resident in her last year. She stayed on at the institution to complete a fellowship in Addiction Medicine. Currently Dr. Woodson-DeFauw is a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Iowa. She holds appointments in both the departments of Family and Community Medicine and the Department of Psychiatry, and she is also one of the core faculty members of the Addiction Medicine Fellowship Program. Dr. Woodson-DeFauw has been a member of the Association of Medicine and Psychiatry for over 5 years. She was the 2022 Fenton Award recipient, and she currently serves on the AMP DEI Committee.

Dr. E. Vanessa Spearman-McCarthy

Dr. E. Vanessa Spearman-McCarthy is a graduate of Spelman College and the Medical College of Georgia. She completed her Residency training at the Medical University of South Carolina (Charleston, SC) in the Combined Internal Medicine and Psychiatry Program, serving as Chief Resident in her last year.

Currently, she is the Associate Dean for Belonging and Inclusivity as well as an Associate Professor of Internal Medicine and Psychiatry at Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University. Her clinical duties include nearly 15 years of service as an Attending Physician on the Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry Service (13 years spent as the former Medical Director) at Wellstar MCG Health as well as practicing as an Outpatient General Internal Medicine Attending. She also serves as the Director for the MCG Student Educational Enrichment Program and the MCG Pre-Matriculation Program. Previously she served for 12 years as one of the core faculty members of the Patient Centered Learning and Case Based Learning Pre-Clerkship Courses. In addition to her administrative and clinical duties, she serves on various committees at the department, hospital, university, regional, and national level. She has been a proud member of the Association of Medicine and Psychiatry for over 15 years. She currently serves as the Inaugural Chair of the DEI Committee.
